The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society presents its 8th Annual Mardi Gras Concert on Saturday, March 2 at Ziggy’s, 433 Baity Street, Winston-Salem. Performing will be Dikki Du and the Zydeco Crew. Showtime will be approximately 9:30 pm. Admission for this show will be $10, and $5 for current PBPS members.

Although Dikki Du and the Zydeco Crew are relative newcomers to the zydeco scene, their frontman comes from an impressive lineage of Louisiana musicians. Dikki Du’s real name is Troy Carrier, the younger brother of zydeco great Chubby Carrier, and son of Roy Carrier, a noted zydeco artist in his own right.

Thirty-one year old Troy Carrier was born in Church Point, Louisiana. Starting at age nine, Troy would join with his brother Chubby, sister Elaine and father Roy and play zydeco music each night after school. Troy started on rubboard, moved to drums (joining Chubby’s band for a time, then began touring with C.J. Chenier). Eventually Troy learned accordion from brother Chubby and formed his own group, Dikki Du and the Zydeco Crew.

Dikki Du’s latest release is Make It Funky on his brother Chubby’s Swampadelic Records. As the title suggests, there is no shortage of funk on this disc, but there’s plenty of traditional, foot-stomping zydeco. Dikki Du continues to carry the zydeco torch that was passed from his father Roy to his older brother Chubby.

As a side note, you can catch Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band at the 16th Annual Carolina "Lite" Blues Festival, Saturday, May 18, at Tanglewood Park, Clemmons, NC.

But you won’t have to wait until then to get your fix of Carrier-style zydeco. Don’t miss Dikki Du and the Zydeco Crew, Saturday, March 2nd at Ziggy’s.

The 8th Annual Mardi Gras Concert is a presentation of the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society; a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to keeping the blues alive. For more information, call (336) 275-4944.
